Interview of Matthias Kirchner

Deakins:
Hi Soldier Matthias, welcome inside the hall of fame! Where do you come from?

Matthias:
Before I became "soldier Matthias" some days ago, I was just an ordinary Phd student in the field of image forensics.

Hale:
What are you working on nowadays (when not involved in the BOWS-2 challenge)?

Matthias:
I'm speaking for myself my new mantra "Do not BOWS all the day. Do not BOWS all the day." all the time.

Hale:
Ho yeah, I can understand. Are you close to other soldiers involved in the BOWS-2 challenge?

Matthias:
Yes, it seems like some kind of BOWS fever has broken out in the Dresden area. I think Andreas did a good job in advertising the contest.

Deakins:
Was it difficult to reach the Hall of Fame?

Matthias:
Well. First I had to finish reading the new Harry Potter. Then I watched the "Broken Arrow" action movie over and over again in order to get some hints how to break your watermark. I even bought several books about nuclear warfare. However, both the film and the books did not help. In a stormy night, John Travolta appeared in my dreams and asked: "Ever thought about a print scan cycle to remove the watermarks?" I found it a promising idea, but the next morning at work, I had to notice that Andreas already exhausted the toner cartridge ... So you see, it was really not easy to enter.

Deakins:
Did you apply the same attack to the three images or was it a dedicated hack for each time?

Matthias:
The same attack with some image dependent parameter fine-tuning.

Hale:
Which aim (image) was the most difficult to shoot ?

Matthias:
Definitely the souvenir picture. I had to be very persuasive to maneuver the picture across the finishing line.

Hale:
What is your opinion about the BOWS contest? Do you think it is useful?

Matthias:
Yes, definitely. It is a really nice playground. And moreover, I had the chance to meet John Travolta ...

Deakins:
Have you some fun entering in the fight?

Matthias:
Without question. The most fun was surely to upload the hacked souvenir picture with more the 38 dB. However, this was before the hash crash ...

Hale:
Well, Deakins and I didn’t find this that funny...
Are you completely addicted, watching the site every hour, or are you relax and confident?

Matthias:
I observed, that BOWSing in the evening with a cooled beer is not bad at all.

Deakins:
What kind of prize would you like to get if you win the contest?

Matthias:
Oh, the winner will get a prize?

Hale:
Yes, and you have no idea what it is! Last question: in your opinion, what will be the average PSNR of the best soldier’?

Matthias:
I think something around 30 dB is a good number at the horizon.

Deakins and Hale:
Thanks soldier Kirchner !
